Slaidburn YFC, Lancashire

Shortlisted for the Community Spirit Award 2020

Identifying that lockdown would enhance feelings of loneliness for older people living in their local rural community, Slaidburn YFC turned to traditional pens and paper.

The club started a pen pal service, with members of the club hand-writing letters to elderly people living in remote locations who were not leaving the house or able to see others.

The letters provided a form of communication and joy for people who were suddenly cut off from loved ones. They found out more about members of the club and how they were able to share their own stories back.

The pen pal service was featured in local and regional newspapers as well as being featured in the NFU British Farmer and Grower magazine.

The club received positive comments from people in the community about how creative the idea was and how much it helped people’s mental wellbeing during a difficult time.

The whole concept has brought together different generations in a safe and comforting way while also promoting a sense of real community spirit.
