Probus YFC, Cornwall

WINNER – Community Spirit Award 2020

During the pandemic, Probus YFC epitomised how important YFCs can be to their local communities. Members went out of their way to deliver care and compassion in their local area – providing an on-call service to deliver vital supplies and prescriptions to the vulnerable and elderly.

Through a 24-hour ‘helpline,’ set up by the club, they administered support to anyone who called with a plea for help. No task was too big or too small – whether it was waiting in the supermarket queues to fetch shopping for vulnerable people to collecting medical equipment from the local hospital, a member of Probus YFC sorted it.

The club processed around 60 orders during the lockdown, supplying the local community and beyond – and providing much-needed contact during a time of isolation.

The club really worked together to ensure they could help others and their actions inspired other clubs across the country to set up their own services. While the initiative was set up to help others, the club's actions also helped them to feel more connected and supported too.

Their kind deeds also attracted wide-ranging media attention and a campaign film they recorded to promote their service helped to improve the reputation of YFC.
