WINNER – Community Supporter of the Year 2020

The devastating effects of the pandemic are being felt far and wide but for those who have lost loved ones, the personal impact has been even greater.

Tragically for Gwyndaf Lewis, the turmoil was brought even closer to home in April when his mother contracted Covid-19 and sadly died at just 59 years old.

As someone who regularly takes on fundraising challenges for charities every year, Gwyndaf decided to channel his grief into raising money for the ICU Unit at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen that cared for his mum.

In May, Gwyndaf set himself a challenge of running 50km – 32 times around Feidr Sion – with a target of raising £500. Gwyndaf smashed this target though – raising an astonishing £37,345 for the ICU Unit and attracting a lot of positive press coverage for his efforts. He went on to organise a run across the Pembrokeshire National Park Costal Path and covered 186 miles in seven days. This event raised a further £3,372, which was donated to Get The Boys a Lift – a local mental health charity.

His achievements inspired members of his club to get involved in fundraising too. Hermon YFC organised a 10-day challenge where more than 80 members and friends ran, walked or cycled 3,700 miles in 10 days and raised 1,040 for two local charities.

Gwyndaf is described as a true inspiration to all YFC members and to his own local community.
