Ed Jones, 24, Nescliffe YFC – founder of EJ Agriculture

WINNER – Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2020

Spotting key trends and acting on them is where Ed Jones is excelling in his new enterprise. EJ Agriculture is now a successful business which shows real growth potential thanks to Ed’s innovation and creativity.

Ed’s agricultural contracting business started with a Massey Ferguson 6160 two years ago, mostly lugging bales and flail topping for local farmers and contractors. Ed is now running a Case Puma 150 with a fleet of trailers, primarily working alongside other contractors and various other farmers across Shropshire. He is also looking at expanding into more cultivation work in the future.

After setting himself up as an agricultural contractor, Ed invested in a firewood processer to launch a firewood processing service. He uses waste heat from a biodigester to dry wood from the woodland he manages. He is quickly becoming one of the leading suppliers of logs in both Shropshire and Cheshire.

Ed’s services, which are all offered nationwide, also include forestry contracting and equestrian contracting and the company is the official Kellfri machinery dealer for Shropshire and Cheshire. The Kellfri dealership gives Ed an annual income alongside his other ventures.

Planning ahead has been key to Ed’s growth and he sought advice from his bank manager and accountant. He has also focused on promotion by using social media extensively and having a presence at agricultural shows to shout about his business.

Ed’s sheer hard work and determination is delivering positive results and he has also been an inspiration to fellow Nesscliffe YFC Members. They have watched Ed’s business develop and seen how he’s supporting the local and regional community where they live.
