"Fun, Learning and Achievement"

When members of Romsey YFC spotted a brightly painted green and yellow caravan that members of another club had taken to Torquay for the NFYFC AGM in 2010  it sowed the seeds of an idea, and the club members went back to Hampshire determined to create themselves a mobile headquarters for their YFC events.

   RECYCLE EVERYTHING

Club secretary Leanne Gibbs said: “Within weeks of returning from the convention, the club was the proud owner of a small and very empty caravan.

“YFC members never like to waste anything and so we salvaged an old kitchen that was being taken out of a farmhouse and the old oak cupboards made a smashing new addition to our caravan.

“Various club members set about making wooden bench seats and created padding from some old deck chair cushions donated by someone's relative.

“We all couldn't wait to set to with the paint and make our mark. We are not by any means artists but Dom Mortimer managed to do a grand job of a few fancy animals and pictures which we then primed and painted with metal paint.

“Everyone had different opinions of what would look good on the caravan so we ended up with a miss-match of pictures ranging from flames, flowers and cows to airplanes, so we have it all!

“As a club, we find that having our mobile YFC unit it makes it very easy to go to shows as everything is already packed. It also acts as a great safe base point for members' belongings, cold drinks and some cool shade in the hot sunny weather. Not forgetting a nice rain shelter when the heavens open.

“Although our caravan was a complete bargain at £70 we didn't get too carried away and did check before buying it that we had members who were licensed to tow!

“Getting a caravan is a great way to bring the club together, have fun, be creative and build something to last. Remember metal paint does not come off easily so don't try painting each other... Oh and we never did find out which county owns the caravan that inspired us and we would be intrigued to find out!

   FUN AND ACHIEVEMENT

Romsey YFC chairman Ed Smales said:This project was a fantastic way to bring all the members of the club together.

“Everyone used the caravan as a blank canvas to share their ideas and made their mark!

We also treated the evenings we spent painting the caravan as social events, so we had the barbecue on the go to help keep the team going while they worked on the renovation.
