The Curve

The Curve has been designed especially for YFCs to help you get the very best out of your club and its members.

A series of fun, interactive workshops explore everything from organising the best money spinners to strengthening relationships in your clubs. Each is around 1.5 hours long, but is designed to be flexible to suit your own club.

The sessions must be delivered by an accredited trainer and registered with the training officer at NFYFC. Trainers are provided with a guide to delivering the training, and all the resources needed for a fun, informative session within your club programme including a certificate of completion. PLUS all trainers could be in with a chance of winning the prestigious Top Trainer Award at the NFYFC AGM!

What’s it all about?

This handy module will help ensure club events are financially sound. Pick up some useful tips and practical advice to ensure maximum fun and wise money-management for YFC events.

What will I learn?

Tips for improving your money management and planning skills along with all you need to know about budgeting. The module covers:

  • Why a budget is important when planning an event
  • Why budgets should be recorded
  • How charities can make and keep budgets
  • The importance of developing a strategic budget.

What’s it all about?

Ever felt not everyone in your club is listened to? This module will boost respect for everyone’s voice and promote confidence and successful communication.

What will I learn?

Tips on how to get your club talking to each other more effectively. If you want to be a more confident communicator, then this workshop will help you to speak out. The module covers:

  • The main forms of communication
  • Why communication must vary based on context
  • Why effective communication is important to the YFC team.

What’s it all about?

It's all about preventing farm accidents. You and your members will gain an awareness of farm safety and be challenged to change behaivours and work towards implementing safer practices on the farm.

What will I learn?

  • The importance of farm safety
  • First aid and first response implications of farming accidents
  • The skills required to make a farm task safe
  • How to assess a farming task, identify risks and the preventative measures
  • The consequences of having a serious farming accident

What’s it all about?

This course is delivered in partnership with the Farming Community Network (FCN) or a similar organisation. The aim is to raise awareness of mental health and rural isolation issues that young people may face living in rural areas and where to turn for support.

  • The stigmas associated with mental health
  • Different mental health issues
  • 5 ways to wellbeing
  • Where to go for support

What’s it all about?

Every YFC is a team. Whether you’re taking part in competitions or just at a club meeting, you are in it together. This module will help your club work better as a team, and teach you how to be a better team player.

  • The benefits of teamwork
  • What makes a good team

What’s it all about?

Positively stand out from the crowd by developing excellent links inside and outside YFC. A thought provoking course which is sure to involve lots of interesting discussion.

If you want to be better at sourcing new opportunities, strengthening relationships and gathering information then this module is a good place to start. It covers:

  • What networking means
  • The three key principles of networking
  • The difference between internal and external networking
  • How to identify places and events where there are networking opportunities
  • How networking can benefit your YFC

What’s it all about?

A YFC is only as good as its members, and the more members the better! Pick up some top tips and techniques for promoting your club and increasing your membership.

What will I learn?

  • Decide if the club needs new members
  • Develop the clubs current marketing ideas
  • Complete a club action plan in a specified timescale

What’s it all about?

Anyone who has ever wondered what ‘best before’ really means will love this module. It’s especially useful for those off to college or who are about to become independent. It’s been produced in conjunction with WRAP, a government food agency running the national ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ campaign.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to interpret all the different dates on food labels, and work out what you can and can’t eat – reducing waste and saving money!

The module covers:

  • Information about the dates quoted on food labels
  • Where to store food safely
  • Information for when the only option is to throw food away
  • Hints and tips on the dishes that can be made with left-over food.

What’s it all about?

Enjoy your nights out (and the mornings after!) even more with this essential guide to the effects of alcohol and knowing your limits. This informal course offers tips and advice for enjoying your drink without causing harm to yourself and others.

What will I learn?

If you are interested in learning more about safe drinking or just want to know more about alcohol in general this course is right for you. It covers:

  • The history behind alcohol
  • The physical effects of alcohol on the body
  • How alcohol affects group dynamics during a social occasion
  • If men really handle drink better than women
  • How to enjoy alcohol safely
  • The alcohol unit contents of drinks
  • How to know your limit

What’s it all about?

Health & Safety is a serious subject, but doesn't need to be complicated or boring. This module will help you understand how to keep your members safe whilst having fun.

  • Your cllub's H & S responsibilities
  • How to plan for a safe club night or visit
  • How to undertake a Risk Assessment

What’s it all about?

Everyone involved in YFC should be aware of the laws around keeping members safe, and this informative module will outline all you need to know to ensure your club are following the correct procedures. It’s not just the chairman’s responsibility to understand the rules around safeguarding, and NFYFC encourages all YFC members, staff and associates to take part in this course.

What will I learn?

The information will help to protect you and your members and ensures you are operating within the law. It covers:

  • What safeguarding means and how it affects your club
  • How to stay safe in your club
  • Your YFC’s safeguarding policy
  • Safeguarding considerations when applying to be an officer
  • Who to talk to if you have safeguarding concerns
  • The benefits of teamwork within safeguarding.

What’s it all about?

Support your YFC and its members during times of change. Develop good understanding of the impact of, and techniques for dealing positively with change. This module will be of particular benefit to YFCs with members of a variety of ages.

What will I learn?

The impact change can have on YFC members and how to support people during that time. The module covers:

  • The different changes people go through as children, teenagers and adults
  • How change can affect behaviour and social capabilities
  • How change can affect people
  • How your club can support members through change.

What’s it all about?

Many YFCs have lost members in tragic road accidents, as young drivers in rural areas are nearly twice as likely to be involved in a collision as those in towns.  This session will help your members to stay safe on rural roads.

What will I learn?

  • The knowledge to understand dangerous driving and its consequences
  • Influencing attitudes to the use of cars and motorbikes in a positive way to discourage dangerous driving
  • Influencing member’s behaviour if they are drivers or passengers to help save their lives by making smarter choices

A good club programme is at the heart of any club. It is crucial for keeping your members informed and engaged and is a good way to attract new members.

  • State what makes a good club programme
  • List the benefits of having a club programme
  • Understand the issues of not having a club programme

What’s it all about?

This course tackles the topic of health and safety in a fun and engaging way so that all members understand the importance of health and safety and risk assessments for their club activities.

  • Understand the clubs H&S responsibilities
  • Undertake a risk assessment
  • Understand the planning needs when undertaking a trip
  • Understanding the planning needs for club activities

What’s it all about?

This course had been designed with the help of professional bankers and accountants to provide Club Treasurers with the information and knowledge they need to help them carry out their role effectively.

What will I learn?

  • Reasons why a Club needs a Treasurer
  • Reporting requirements for the Charity Commission
  • How to manage a bank account, bank cash, and use online banking
  • The thought process of organising the finances for an event
  • Bookkeeping, budgeting, cash flow and independent examination
This session is supported by NatWest and will be delivered by them alongside an YFC Trainer.
