Forage Aid Trophy

Awarded to the YFC Club that has raised the most money for the charity Forage Aid.

Winners: Wix & District YFC, Essex

Finding a connection with a charity that a club wants to support can be tricky but Wix & District YFC feel fundraising for Forage Aid makes perfect sense for young farmers.

The Club had a record year for fundraising in 2018-19 and Tom Fairley – the Club Chairman for that year – suggested the club should donate £1,500 of it to Forage Aid.

“We never expected to win the trophy for the donation,” said current Club Chairman Liz Bacon. “We thought there would be bigger donations.”

The club is well aware of Forage Aid’s work because former NFYFC Chairman Ed Ford – and a member of Essex Federation – is one of the charity’s trustees. The charity first started in 2015 in the wake of two severe flooding events, where farmers – such as Ed and members of Essex – rallied round to help those in the affected communities.

“We knew about Forage Aid as Essex Young Farmers were involved in helping with Ed when it all kicked off,” explained Liz who this year organised a talk about Forage Aid for the club where Ed shared his experience with the charity and the help it offers.

“It was probably one of our favourite meetings we have had this year. Members asked lots of questions and were genuinely interested in Forage Aid’s work. It would be a great talk to have at our County building – perhaps when groups can meet again properly!”

Ed’s presentation has definitely made an impact on Wix & District YFC members and Liz believes it is because of the charity’s objective to relieve the suffering of farm animals by providing feed, bedding and/or transportation during extreme weather events.

“Unless you have been through something personally, it’s difficult to choose a charity for the club to support as there are so many charities that do amazing work – but a lot of our members are farmers and understand the impact floods can have on livestock. I definitely think it’s a charity other clubs should learn about. It’s thanks to Tom’s great idea to donate to Forage Aid that Wix YFC has won the trophy."
