“YFC is a great way to meet new people and make useful contacts. It is a really good talking point during interviews (for university and jobs)."

Name: Matthew Southall (22)

YFC: Coleshill YFC in Warwickshire (joined Inkbarrow YFC while on placement year)

Job title: Student at Harper Adams studying Rural Enterprise and Land Management. Recently completed trainee Land Agent at The Ragley Estate and did a placement year internshipat GVA in Commercial Property Restructuring and Recovery.

How YFC helped me:

“When I did my placement from Harper Adams University at The Ragley Estate, I moved to Worcestershire and joined Inkbarrow YFC. They were very welcoming and I met lots of new people. I didn't know anyone in the club to start with, but got involved and helped with their events, competitions and fundraising. I've since moved back to Warwickshire and joined Coleshill again.

“YFC is a great way to meet new people and make useful contacts. It is a really good talking point during interviews (for university and jobs). When I went for an interview at GVA (a commercial, city-based company), they were very interested in talking about YFC.

YFC opens up a lot of opportunities, and getting involved with the sports and competitions are great ways to meet like-minded people. The Public Speaking competitions have boosted my confidence in talking to people and doing presentations that are required at university and in the workplace. YFC members have a ‘get stuck in and give it a go’ attitude. It’s certainly an infectious attitude as I found myself performing in the national final of a dancing competition at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool despite never dancing seriously before! We came second and it was an amazing experience and a real highlight for me.

If it wasn’t for joining YFC, I wouldn’t have gone to university and been where I am now. I was introduced to Harper Adams through a YFC friend, and after visiting, I decided that’s where I wanted to go.  I’m not sure I would have chose this degree or university had it not been for YFC and I am so glad I did as it has been the best decision I have ever made. Well, apart from joining YFC!”
