2008 Farm Business Development Competition
The NFYFC farm business development competition is devised to present a realistic scenario for YFC members to hone their business skills in order secure a farm tenancy.
National Farm Business Development Competition 2008 - (Sponsored by The Tenant Farmers Association [TFA] and Supported by DEFRA)
Competitors are given a case study (a working farm) with all necessary details of enterprises, machinery, livestock, acreage, crops, soil type, accommodation, buildings and a hypothetical scenario from which they will complete the task set.
There is a new format operating for this year’s NFYFC Farm Business Development Competition. The task will be available to competitors from April and dates for viewing the farm at Warwickshire College are 9 April 12 - noon onwards, 10 May - 2.30 onwards and 7 June - 2.30 onwards. It’s still direct entry, but you will have more time to complete your project which must be posted to NFYFC by 14 June. Competitors who have submitted a project to NFYFC will be allocated Royal Show tickets for Friday 4 July and will attend the competition briefing and feedback from judges, interviews if short-listed and an awards ceremony at the Farmers Club pavilion.
The task for this year’s competition is now available on-line (see below). Please note the change in format and rules.
Competition packs will be sent to counties or competitors upon notifying NFYFC of an intention to enter. (Competitors will be sent tickets for the Royal Show on receipt of a completed NFYFC Farm Business Development Competition project.)
The first opportunity for the case study farm-viewing is Wednesday 9 April 12.00 noon onwards at the Warwickshire College Farm, Moreton Morrell, Warwickshire, CV35 9BL. Please report to the farm office. (Please see directions document below)

Running a business development competition in your County or Club
The principles of the NFYFC farm business development competition can be applied to county competitions or adapted to suit different themes of business development competitions.
It is important to make sure that your competition matches industry requirement and it’s advisable for judging criteria to be discussed and agreed by the organisers and judges. If you are devising a similar type of competition on a county or club level, the following points might be helpful:
Make sure the judging criteria is made available to both judges and competitors
Find a suitable case study – if it’s a farm, make sure the correct risk assessments are made and that an efficient H&S policy is in place. It could be a business development project based on a different subject ie a community, renewable or housing project
Find suitably qualified judges who may give invaluable input to the task of the competition and judging criteria
Highlight the learning and skills outcomes of the competition task to support any application for sponsorship
Finally, NFYFC has a partnership with Shell LiveWire which can help all YFC competitors with advice on business start-ups and can be accessed via the NFYFC website by clicking here. This service is free of charge and available for anyone with access to the internet.
