Packed theatre for Clwyd YFC Eisteddfod

Clwyd YFC members are buzzing after another excellent evening of competition and entertainment at the annual Eisteddfod.

The event was held in Ruthin for the first time in many years and drew a large audience to the John Ambrose Theatre.

Crowds watched as members from 11 clubs across Denbighshire, Conwy, Wrexham and Flintshire showcased their talents in 16 competitions in the music, speaking and light entertainment sections of the traditional event.

Literature and artworks from the nine homework sections were judged and the bard’s chair was awarded to Gwenno Edwards, of Pentrefoelas YFC for her short story on the theme Go For It. This year’s chair was given by MWS, of Ruthin, and made by Mal Dawson.

The audience and judges, Alwyn Sion, Ann Davies, Andrea Parry and Beryl Griffiths, were thoroughly impressed with the county’s singers, speakers, poets, writers and comedians.

Uwchaled YFC were the overall winners of the Flint FUW shield and also took silverware for the best choir, the homework shield and most points for stage competitions.

Betws yn Rhos YFC won the JE Foulkes shield for the club with fewer than 30 members accruing the most points and also won the Mai Ellis cup for the best speaking party.

Alaw Rossington, of Betws yn Rhos YFC, won the Penrhwylfa cup for the best competitor under 16, and the Iwan Bryn Goleu memorial trophy for the Eisteddfod’s best performer was awarded to Manon Celyn, of Uwchaled YFC, for her solo from a musical.

“We had a great Eisteddfod in our new venue and it was wonderful to see the place full,” said Clwyd YFC organiser Eleri Roberts.

“Congratulations to Gwenno Edwards for winning the chair and thanks to all our winners. They will now go through to the Wales YFC Eisteddfod at Venue Cymru, in Llandudno, where we hope they will win for Clwyd.”

Brecknock

Brecknock YFC Field Day

Brecknock YFC members gathered at the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells, on 31 October for the annual field day.

Members took part in nine different competitions: ATV safety and handling, junior nature challenge, decorating a christmas tree, junior farm safety, club promotion, fence erecting, public speaking (16 and under), county exhibit and Welsh public speaking (26 and under).

The county exhibit was a new competition introduced to the field day this year and which proved popular. Clubs were asked to produce an exhibit on the theme My Home County and each exhibit had to include a floral arrangement, a county flag or emblem (needlework), a local dessert, four mounted photographs and a decorated cake.

The day closed with the awards ceremony where the overall Elizabeth John Field Cup was presented to Troedrhidalar YFC. Joint second place were Erwood YFC, Llandefalle YFC and Sennybridge YFC.

Cornwall

Cornwall YFC celebrates a fantastic year

The Cornwall Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs recently held its 72nd annual general meeting at the Pavilion Centre on the Royal Cornwall Showground.

Members, family and friends gathered to hear outgoing county chairwoman Nicola Chegwidden, from Summercourt, give an account of her year, highlighting the many successes.

She recalled how her year had started with the New Members Fortnight, which aimed to get the name of YFC out and about in a bid to increase membership, and which resulted in 31 new members.

Nicola also highlighted the instigation of the Youth Forum; a team building camp; the federation’s contribution to the consultation on Children, Young People and Alcohol; and the creation of the Cornwall Fresh Start Academy, a programme for young people who want to be the agricultural entrepreneurs of the future.

The AGM was the last to be presided over by Jonathan Coode, president of the federation for the past nine years. Mr Coode expressed his joy in being involved with so many positive and enthusiastic young people over the years and wished his successor, the Hon Evelyn Boscawen, well in the future.

The members of the federation thanked Mr Coode for his contribution over the years by making him an Honarary Life Member.

Three vice presidents were also welcomed to the federation: Martin Howlett, a past Cornwall NFU chairman from Callington, Roger May, an agricultural merchant from St Austell, and Jim Large, auctioneer and partner of Lodge & Thomas, from Truro.

As county chairwoman, Nicola had chosen to raise money for Epilepsy Support and the Sapphire nurse at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. She was proud to be able to present a cheque for £7,800 to Mary Perrett from the Royal Cornwall Hospital, who is a Sapphire nurse and a specialist in helping people in Cornwall who suffer from Epilepsy.

Nicola thanked the members for the opportunity to be county chairwoman, stating: “It’s the best thing that I’ve ever done and I’m very proud to say that I’ve been chairwoman of the best county in the country!”

St Albans Junior member makes world headlines

St Albans Juniors YFC member Elly Deacon, 13, has been making headlines after beating experienced farmers to first place in a ploughing competition.

Elly, a YFC member for four years, learned to drive a tractor four days before the event and spent just an hour a day learning to plough before going on to beat 40 other competitors, some of them with 50 years' experience, in the Redbourn and District Agricultural Competitions Association's plough match.

And her win has made headlines across the globe. She was featured on ITN news,  in the Sun, the Mirror and Times, the Cape Town Times and the paper in Rekyavik, Iceland.

St Albans Juniors YFC leader Will Dickinson said Elly had shocked everyone with her ploughing skills. "It's usually one of the old boys who win, so to see a teenage girl clinch the title is quite rare. Elly was very confident throughout the competition and she was even waving to her friends while ploughing. It's a wonder she managed to keep a straight course," he said.

Here's what Elly had to say about her win.

More than 350 past and present YFC members and supporters joined the diamond celebration, and NFYFC president Lionel Hill was the guest speaker for the evening.

A cheque for £2,500 was presented to the county's air ambulance, which the club raised throughout the year at a host of events.

Bedfordshire

North Beds YFC's bootiful fundraiser

Last year the club built a 10ft tall pair of wellies to raise the profile of YFC and raise money for RABI.

This year members revamped one of the wellies and took it to the East of England Autumn Show on 11 October to continue to promote YFC and generate money for the charity.

The club raised more than £80 and had a great day out.
