The Lottery-funded Food for Life Partnership is inviting schools to enroll and work towards Bronze, Silver and Gold Marks for good food culture, rewarding everything from seasonal, local & organic meals to cooking and growing activity and links with farms. The first Marks will be awarded in April 2008, enabling parents to choose schools on the basis of their commitment to healthy and sustainable living rather than just SATs results. Go to www.foodforlife.org.uk for more details.
FACE is working with the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) to establish a new co-development network of schools from across England which will work together to take a fresh look at delivering the secondary curriculum. Linked to the Year of Food and Farming in 2007/08, the network will enable teachers to consider how they can create a coordinated approach to learning based around food and farming. The overall aim of the new secondary curriculum is to enable all young people to become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens. For more information please see the dedicated website: www.curriculum.qca.org.uk or to find out more about the network contact fiona@face-online.org.uk
The Home Grown Cereals Authority (HGCA) and the Flour Advisory Bureau (FAB) have collaborated to produce a new multimedia educational resource called The Grain Chain. It offers children a fun way to learn about the ‘field to fork’ cycle of how wheat is grown and used to produce breads and cereals plus advice on eating for health and vitality. It also offers visual, up-to-date materials including activity sheets, games and quizzes which cover the key topics of arable farming, milling, baking, cooking and nutrition. Teachers are offered the benefits of interactive whiteboard activities as an additional classroom resource plus a dedicated Teachers section to be found at www.grainchain.com
The new Active Kids Get Cooking Challenge 2008 has been set and details of the challenge have now been sent in to all UK schools in the form of an exciting poster! The multipurpose poster, which includes details of the challenge, takes the form of a calendar and shows which fruit and vegetables are in season each month www.activekidsgetcooking.org.uk
