NFYFC Chairman joins NFU President looking to the future
NFU President Peter Kendall will be leading a workshop on the 'Next Generation of Farming' on the second day of NFU Conference this year. NFYFC chairman Bryce Mackellar will join Peter along with Rob Harrison, a former NFYFC Agriculture and Rural Affairs Chairman, from the newly-formed NFU Young Dairy Board. The workshop runs from 9am-10.30am on Tuesday, 17 February, in the Arden Room at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole. Anyone who is unable to get tickets for the conference can view the session live as it happens via the NFU Conference website. Support for farmers affected by movement restrictions
If your farming business is being affected by the lastest foot and mouth movement restrictions, practical support and a listening ear are on hand at the Farm Crisis Network (FCN). You can talk to volunteers on the organisation’s helpline between 7.00am and 11.00pm each day. Callers will be offered support from local FCN groups and other farming support organisations as appropriate. FCN is hoping that the disease will not spread any further. However, preparations are in place to provide extra support for those who call for help. “We know that there will be long-term implications for all those affected and the movement restrictions are already causing difficulties for farmers across the country,” said the organisation’s national coordinator Christopher Jones. FCN has provided support for the farming community for the past 12 years and works closely with its Farming Help partner charities, Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI) and ARC-Addington Fund. Lantra, the Sector Skills Council for the environmental and land-based industries, was a guest exhibitor in the YFC marquee during the Royal Show and used the opportunity to survey YFC members about their training needs. A total of 126 members were questioned and asked to place 11 areas of skills training in order of importance to them. The survey results were then calculated on the basis of ranking, using a weighting system: responses in the first choice column were given a five point score, responses in the second choice column, a four point score, and so on.
The 11 areas of skills training from which the survey participants could choose were selected prior to the Royal Show after consulting with YFC county federations. Lantra will use the survey results when it bids for national and regional funding. Three prizes were allocated to randomly picked respondents.
