Fun, Learning, and Achievement

25 November 2015

Douglas Murray, a Yorkshire YFC member in his younger years and a lifetime stalwart of the Young Farmers’ organisation, passed away on Sunday 15 November 2015 at his home near Newhaven, East Sussex.

Following some years as a Farm Manager, Doug, a staunch Yorkshireman, Doug took on the role of Club Leader of Wharfedale YFC from the mid-50s until 1962 when he was appointed County Organiser of the West Riding of Yorkshire Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs.  In the early ‘70s, and with strong support and guidance from neighbouring County Organisers, Doug took up a role with the National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs (NFYFC) as Advisory Officer for the Northern and West Midlands Areas of YFC.

In 1976 he went on to become NFYFC Deputy Secretary, leading the NFYFC Competitions Programmes and working with sponsors to raise the funds to develop these activities.  In 1987 he took on the role of South East and South West Area Co-ordinator and retired to East Sussex in 1990. In gratitude for his long, dedicated service Doug  was made an Honorary Life Member of NFYFC in 1992.  Following his appointment as Advisory Member to Ringmer and Lewes YFC (Sussex FYFC) from 2012-14, he was elected Vice President of the Club.

Doug leaves behind his wife, Mary, two sons and a daughter and two stepsons. He will be sorely missed by many friends and former colleagues.

A Service of Thanksgiving will be held on Monday 30th November at 3pm in Piddinghoe Church, Piddinghoe, Newhaven, East Sussex.
