The National Sheep Association (NSA) has launched a competition for young shepherds with cash prizes on offer for the winners.

The competition is open to young shepherds aged 26 years and under and will take place on 27 January 2017 at NSA’s Central Region Early Gathering event.

The winner of the competition will receive a trophy and £275, with second place winning £150 and third place £75. Rosettes and prize cards will be given up to sixth place. There is also a special £50 prize for the highest placed 21 years and under competitor.

All competitors will be expected to be able to carry out the tasks listed below
  • Live Lamb Classification
  • Belly Clip two sheep.  
  • Demonstrate  ATV handling skills
  • Demonstrate handling, vaccinating & dosing/ topical application of appropriate products (e.g. work out correct weight of sheep for dosage of products and correct examples of injection sites)
  • Demonstrate and explain ram/tup MOT techniques. (AHDB Beef and Lamb the “5 Ts”)
  • Answer questions on flock management and health issues

  1. Maximum age of 26 years on 26th January 2017
  2. Entry is free
  3. The judges’ decision is final
  4. The competition will start at 10am and finish at 3pm latest
  5. The prize giving will take place at 3.30 pm on the NSA Stand
