National Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs

Fun, Learning, and Achievement

The Youth Forum were on pretty safe ground in Belfast for this year’s Residential Weekend as members attended a safety session with their sponsors the Farm  Safety Foundation.

Along with members of the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster, Youth Forum members visited RADAR NI.  This included a tour the farm safe area, supported by the Farm Safety Foundation and the members had a go at the interactive Young Drivers simulator. The tour is a hard hitting experience, designed to make drivers realise the massive responsibility they have when driving and the impact their choices behind the wheel can have on others.

Edward Ford, NFYFC’s Chairman of Council, joined the Youth Forum for the tour and said: “As technology advances within farming, the risk of accidents can actually increase. While the safety of machinery and equipment has improved, the fact that machines can do so much more can make people complacent. It’s fantastic to have an outside organisation like the Farm Safety Foundation help us deliver this vital message and for our members to consider situations they could come across on their own farms when they go home or in their future workplace.”

A Curve module on Farm Safety is now available and includes group activities, discussions and videos from ambassadors who have been affected by a life changing farm accident.

This educational resource will allow the Foundation to engage with YFC members who have left college or have pursued a vocational route into the industry, increase awareness of the campaign and receive valuable feedback from participants.

Made up of members aged 20 and under, the Youth Forum represents the voices of younger members of the Federation. The February meeting is when the group discuss their future plans and elect their new Chairman and Vice Chairman.

Thomas Oatey from Cornwall FYFC was elected as the new Chairman of Council during the weekend and Rachel Black from Bedfordshire was elected as the new Vice Chairman.
