Whitchurch YFC is the winner of NFYFC’s YFC Selfie competition 2017 – beating off 53 other entries to the prize of a digital camera, courtesy of HOPS Recruitment.

Judges Chris Stark from BBC Radio 1 and NFYFC President Charlotte Smith were tasked with choosing the YFC they would most like to join after looking at all the YFC Selfies and Whitchurch YFC was their favourite.

“The picture sums up everything about the spirit of young farmers. A group of people who work hard but through NFYFC make great friends, support each other and have a laugh,” said Chris.  “Whatever they are up to when this was taken looks fun, everyone’s smiling and it makes me want to don a cow onesie and get involved. Nice one guys!”

The Shropshire Club was formed in 1961 and has more than 100 members who meet at Whitchurch Rugby Club every Wednesday.

Chairman Harry Morgan and Club Secretary Jayne Bennett were thrilled to hear that Chris and Charlotte wanted to join their club and offered them an open invitation to join as long as they love dressing up and are willing to try their hand at ploughing at their annual match.

“It is such a buzz to win a tough competition and an awesome job by the Whitchurch YFC team,” said Harry. “Members brought along their achievements from the year and props including the amazing cow onesies! We can’t wait to use our shiny new camera to capture all of the fun moments of our YFC calendar. Thank you so much HOPS!”

Whitchurch YFC won a new digital camera with video functionality so they can record even more great memories, thanks to HOPS Recruitment. HOPS Director John Hardman said: “Congratulations from all at HOPS to Whitchurch YFC on winning the YFC Selfie competition. We love the cow onesies!”

NFYFC President Charlotte said despite a difficult choice, the winner shone out. “This pic just makes me smile, it just looks fun. Which is NFYFC all over: friends, fun, learning, supporting and some dodgy fashion choices!”

Whitchurch YFC said they would love Chris Stark and Charlotte Smith to join their club but the invitation comes with a few conditions:

  1. They must love dressing up. “We love fancy dress! As you can see from our selfie and we organise a fancy dress Christmas bash every year and enter the drama competition, which we can’t wait for this year because its panto,” says Harry.
  2. Be creative. “We love creative members or even just block painters because we love competing at the Shropshire show float competition and have won 1st prize four times in the last five years!” says Harry.
  3. Ploughing enthusiasts. “We organise an annual ploughing match, which is now the largest independent ploughing match in the UK attracting 126 plough men last year!”
  4. Helpful. “They should be willing to offer a helping hand because our very own member Clarrie Hocknell is County Chair this year and we are excited about helping her – especially having Shropshire Chairman’s ball right on our doorstep!”
  5. Party animals. “We love to party and host a summer bash and dinner and dance every year in September and we hold a bonfire and fireworks every year which is always successful with young farmers and the local community.”
  6. Team players. “In 2017 we were the second largest club in Shropshire with over 100 members – we are hoping to be the biggest and the best this year and repeat our success of October 2016 when we were named top club in Top 10 magazine.”
  7. Sporty and competitive. “We love getting involved with the tug of war, netball and football competitions especially!”
