NFYFC is calling on its younger members, aged under 18, to give their views on activities, events or projects they would like to see. 

NFYFC’s Youth Forum, which represents the views of younger members, is meeting on 4 February and wants to hear feedback to help guide its work.

There are 14 members of the Youth Forum that will meet in Edinburgh next month and the meeting forms part of their Residential Weekend. As well as team building activities, including quad biking and clay pigeon shooting, the group will be welcoming new members and bidding others goodbye.

They will also hand over projects during the weekend and review the work of the other four Council Steering Groups to ensure their activities consider younger YFC members.  Their feedback will be given to the Steering Groups ahead of the national Council meeting on 16-17 February.

If your YFC or County Federation worked together on a project with a common goal, on a voluntary basis, you could enter the The Rural Youth Project (RYE) of the Year competition.

The competition is designed to share innovative local projects with all organisations under the RYE umbrella. The winner will be awarded with two places to the European Rally - this year taking place at the Bridge of Earn, Scotland. The winners travel expenses to the Rally are refunded up to the value of 250 Euros.

Each member organisation of Rural Youth Europe can submit a maximum of 3 projects. If NFYFC receives more than three projects, a short listing process will take place, identifying the three projects that showcase the best of NFYFC against the judgement criteria (details within the document 'RYP 2017 Call for entries'.

Instructions for submitting projects:

  1. Fill in the submission form
  2. Create an automated presentation no longer than three minutes. Further details of the project specification are listed within the document 'RYP 2017 Call for entries'.
  3. Submit the submission form and presentation to NFYFC on or before Wednesday 21 February 2018.  Please send to Erica Attwood
  4. NFYFC will send submissions to RYEurope by the final deadline.

A new mental health campaign is being launched in February (12-16) by the Farm Safety Foundation to raise awareness of depression in the farming community. 

Whilst the UK’s farmers are renowned for the attention they give to their livestock, crops and machinery, The Farm Safety Foundation says unfortunately farmers do not have such a good track record when it comes to taking care of themselves and their own wellbeing.

Levels of depression are thought to be increasing and suicide rates in farmers are among the highest in any occupational group (ONS). The situation is compounded by the fact that farming tends to be an innately conservative culture and there is often stigma and taboo attached to mental health. This can hinder people’s willingness to speak about the issue and to seek help.

Many in the industry have highlighted the impact of mental health and wellbeing on farm safety. The Mind Your Head campaign aims to raise awareness and inform farmers and farming communities about the role they play in identifying and supporting those with mental health issues.

Stephanie Berkeley from the Farm Safety Foundation said: “We hope to bring to the fore the challenges facing our famers in an industry with a poor track record of mental health and the wonderful sources of help, advice and guidance available to them.”

YFCs are encouraged to support the campaign in association with the work NFYFC does around Rural+ and raising issues of rural isolation.

Have you got what it takes to prove you’re Army fit and complete ABF The Soldiers’ Charity’s new challenge, Rifle Run, the first civilian event of its kind?

Based on a military exercise called a ‘March and Shoot’, Rifle Run combines three shooting challenges (air-rifle and shotgun) with a 10km cross country run. It is taking place on Sunday 18th March 2018 on the stunning West Wycombe estate, Buckinghamshire, under the watchful eye of E.J. Churchill and British Shooting (shooting novices are very welcome). Compete against the clock but be careful, if you miss a shot you run a 250m penalty lap, so could end up running 15km in total!

ABF The Soldiers’ Charity is the National Charity of the British Army. It gives a lifetime of support to soldiers, veterans and their immediate families, in times of need. Competing in Rifle Run will give you a glimpse of the physical exertion that soldiers endure, whilst raising vital funds to help those in need of support.

The Women’s Vote Centenary Grant Scheme is a £1.5 million government fund that will support local and community groups across England in celebrating the centenary of women gaining the right to vote.

YFC County Federations or YFC Clubs can consider if there is a project that could be run using this type of funding.

The grant scheme has two types of funds:

  1. Approximately 150 Small Grants of between £300 to £2,000 for grassroots projects to run small-scale events and activities to celebrate the centenary of women gaining the vote. There will be three bidding rounds during 2018.
  2. Up to 30 Large Grants of between £2,000 and £125,000. These will fund projects that increase the understanding of, and engagement with, democracy, and encourage women to participate in public life. There will be two bidding rounds during 2018.

Both funds are open to organisations and activity in England only. Each of the devolved administrations has been provided additional funding to celebrate the centenary in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and are making their own arrangements.

Round 1 of the Small Grants Fund for grants up to £2,000 is open for online applications from 4th January 2018 to the closing date on 31st January 2018.

Activities planned for the anniversary on 6th February 2018 of the passing of the law allowing women to vote for the first time will be prioritised under Round 1. If you are applying for activities that will take place on or around 6th February 2018, please return your application by 7th January 2018. This will allow the processing of your application and give you an outcome by 16th January 2018.

Please do use the guidance and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to plan your activity. There is also a model application form so you can find out what information you need in order to apply. Please use this form for guidance only, all applications should be submitted through the online portal here.

Please read the guidance carefully before you apply to make sure that you and your project idea are eligible for the fund.

If you are planning a celebration activity after 30th April 2018 then it might be more appropriate for you to apply for funding under Round 2 — dates for which will be confirmed in due course.

Round 3 is likely to take place in August 2018.

Young Farmers will have an even greater incentive to train hard for the Stockman of the Year competition now that a prize worth £250.00 is on offer to the winner. 

This year’s first place winner will receive a Moocall Calving Sensor thanks to Moocall UK. This innovative and award-winning sensor monitors the contractions of a pregnant cow and alerts the farmer when calving will commence through SMS, email and app updates.

The Stockman of the Year national final, which is sponsored by Rutland Electric Fencing, will be held on 1-2 September 2018 and YFC members compete in County and Area rounds throughout the membership year.

The competition aims to give YFC members the opportunity to judge quality livestock and present to industry experts. Members gain skills in observation, communication, presentation and personal development. The competition also helps to develop understanding of the makeup of an animal and market demands.  

Ryan McBridge from Moocall explained why the company was eager to offer a prize for young farmers.

"Efficient farming methods will be crucial in the years ahead, meaning tools like the Moocall Calving Sensor will be key.

"The NFYFC’s role in showing the farmers of tomorrow how to achieve that goal, then, is a worthy cause," said Ryan.

Only YFC members who have won County and Area rounds make it through to NFYFC’s national final to place and give reasons on six beef animals, six breeding ewes, six butchers pigs and six dairy animals.

Competitors are also required to complete a written project on stock management, including animal health and production records, in advance of the competition final. All competitors are interviewed on the role of a stockman and questioned by a veterinary surgeon on animal health and husbandry, as well as demonstrating practical tasks.

Competitions Steering Group Chairman Rachel Parker said: “We are delighted to have such an impressive prize from Moocall to give to the national winner of the Stockman of the Year competition. We know how much work goes into competing for this title and we hope that this prize offers even more of an incentive to practice and hone those judging skills ahead of the national finals.
