For the second year running, British Wool is offering NFYFC members a saving of more than 50% on training for a Blue Seal qualification.

The qualification is a must for all those YFC members who want to take part in NFYFC’s Sheep Shearing competition.

NFYFC members are being offered a two-day course for £80 (plus VAT), which is a discount of over 50% off the standard course fee. To be eligible to take advantage of this offer you must be a current member of a Young Farmers' Club affiliated to NFYFC within England and Wales, and not have attended a course previously.

Richard Schofield, British Wool’s Shearing Manager, said: “It takes quite a few years to improve ability, but if you start the right way it makes life much easier. It’s a lot harder to unravel bad habits.”

The training course includes:

  • An introduction to shearing
  • Health and safety and the use of shearing equipment
  • Demonstrations and hands-on practice.
  • One-to-one support by an instructor.

A range of dedicated NFYFC courses will be offered but if there isn’t enough interest in one Area an alternative will be offered.

Dion Hughes from Uwchaled YFC in Clwyd, won NFYFC’s 2018 Sheep Shearing competition. After winning at the Great Yorkshire Show, Dion said: “You’re never too experienced to learn more about shearing. I did my Blue Seal training when I was 17 and I worked up to the next level. One regret is I didn’t do enough courses through British Wool so I’m going to do some more so I can keep on improving.”

British Wool is also offering wool handling courses to YFC members for £50 plus VAT for one day’s training from a top competitive wool handler.  Contact Alison Gould or Richard Schofield using the information below for further information.

YFCs can also find out more about the wool processing chain and hear tips from wool experts through dedicated tours with British Wool in 2019. To book places for your club contact British Wool directly.

To reserve your Blue Seal training place:

The closing date for applications is 30 March 2019. Please contact Alison Gould on 01647 24804 or or Richard Schofield on 07966 291618. You’ll need to give your name, address, date of birth and YFC membership card number.

A chance to learn more about the challenge of rural leadership has been offered to one of NFYFC’s leading Council officers.

Katie Hall, Vice Chair of NFYFC’s Council, successfully applied for The Challenge of Rural Leadership Course (CRL) through the Worshipful Company of Farmers. Katie will spend two weeks in January at the Duchy College on an intensive programme of management and leadership skills development and training.

The course involves hearing from internationally recognised speakers and guests from commercial businesses, not-for-profit organisations, government agencies and the armed forces.

The aim of the course is to provide high-achieving managers with the skills and capabilities to grow and thrive in continuously changing and increasingly challenging conditions.

As a Vice Chair of NFYFC, Katie is hoping the skills she picks up will help in developing the new strategic plan for the organisation – as well as be useful in her professional life as a calf nutritionist.

“Strong leadership is a must during times of change and as NFYFC embarks on its strategic review, this course looks set to equip me with the skills needed to support the Federation,” said Katie. “I am extremely grateful to the Worshipful Company of Farmers for the opportunity to develop my leadership skills and for their contribution towards the course fees, as well as the generous donations from other organisations too.”

The Worshipful Company of Farmers has given a contribution towards the course fees and Katie has also sourced additional funding from Gloucester Farmers Club, Moreton-in-Marsh Agricultural Society and the Central Region Farmers Trust so far.

Any organisations interested in supporting Katie on the course should contact NFYFC and the information will be sent on to Katie.
