In this time of unprecedented political uncertainty, we know the government’s preferred option is to leave the EU with a deal but there’s also a range of information and guidance in case the UK leaves the EU without a Brexit deal.

We’re all in this together, so let’s help communicate as much useful information as possible.

Guidance has already been prepared by government on the farmer information page on the government website. Further details will continue to be circulated regarding EU Exit as and when received and you can follow @DefraGovUK or visit Prepare your business or organisation for the UK leaving the EU and Prepare for EU Exit.

Specific information is available in the following areas:

Concluding the Special European Council held on 10 April, the Prime Minister agreed with the EU27 leaders an extension to the EU Exit process. The conclusions are here and key points are:

  • The UK and the EU27 have agreed to grant a flexible extension of the Article 50 period for six months to 31 October;
  • If the Withdrawal Agreement is ratified by both parties before 31 October, the extension would be terminated (withdrawal would take place on the first day of the following month);
  • The agreement also includes a “take stock” moment at the 20-21 June European Council;
  • During this time, the UK will continue sincere cooperation as a full Member State with all the relevant rights and obligations;
  • HMG has agreed this extension through a letter from Sir Tim Barrow to Donald Tusk.
