A joke about the reality of some YFC baking attempts was the subject of the winning YFC Meme for National Young Farmers’ Week 2019, sponsored by NatWest.

The winning Meme, created by Long Itchington YFC in Warwickshire, received the highest number of likes, shares and comments across Instagram and Facebook. The Meme reached more than 23,000 people on Facebook alone during the week and the numbers are still climbing.

A photo of a tractor cake that was taken the night before Warwickshire’s County Rally a few years ago inspired the Club’s idea for the Meme. Their winning Meme features an expertly created tractor cake labelled ‘expectation’ next to the Rally tractor cake attempt labelled ‘reality.’

The funny idea sparked a massive reaction from current and former YFC members who tagged friends and recalled similar failed cookery attempts.

Hannah Clarke, Long Itchington YFC’s Press Officer said: “The competition was great fun to be involved in, and it was fantastic to help raise the profile of Young Farmers!

“We're chuffed that our meme received the most engagement, we had a good laugh making it and felt a lot of people could relate to it!”

The winning club will receive £300 from NatWest to spend how they wish and Hannah says they already have plans.

“We're really grateful to receive the £300 prize money, and would like to put it towards club recruitment and promotion. We are really hoping to expand our junior section this year in particular, and the money will allow us to subsidise meeting costs, create promo material and put on more in-house activities.”

NFYFC shortlisted five Memes to run on its social media channels throughout National Young Farmers’ Week from 30 September to 4 October. These included entries from Aire Valley YFC, Gower YFC, Wedmore YFC and Witheridge YFC.

All of the entries received a positive response across social media and really helped to promote the organisation on a wider scale.
