A mascot race event dreamed up by Yorkshire YFC in 2005 and now the
biggest of its type in the world has now migrated north of the border.
This year’s Mascot Gold Cup organised by Yorkshire YFC and national healthcare charity Sue Ryder is taking place on 17 April at Wetherby Races and a week later its new sister race, the Scottish Mascot Gold Cup, will be held at Musselbrough race course, Scotland.
The race, sponsored by Foresters, has raised £75,000 for good causes in its five-year history and organisers are hoping for a large turnout of entries this year to help take that fundraising total over the £85,000 mark this year.
Last year more than 50 mascots joined in the bizarre spectacle which includes a mascot parade and culminates in a one furlong dash to the Wetherby finish line over six small fences. There is also a competition held for the best YFC homemade mascot, which receives a trophy and a cash prize to donate to the winner’s chosen charity.
A week later Musselbrough racecourse will host the inaugural Scottish Mascot Gold Cup, helped by members of the Scottish Association of Young Farmers’ Clubs.
Sue Ryder fundraiser and former chairman of Yorkshire YFC Andrew Wood said: “We hope we can pick up many new debutant mascots this year and that the Scottish event will be as big a success as the original one at Wetherby.
“The mascot races are a great corporate and group trip out to the races with the special twist that people can cheer on their colleagues in an actual race on the racecourse turf.”
Two debutant mascots this year are Stanley the Stag and Pom Pom the Polar Bear from the Christmas Adventure at Stockeld Park near Wetherby.
It is also hoped that YFC members will be turning out in force again making their own mascots on the theme of their favourite market stall, which was decided on by the theme sponsor, the National Market Traders Association.
