Northumberland YFC's Matthew Sharp is celebrating after winning one of only ten places on the annual Guild of Agricultural Journalists training course for aspiring journalists in the agriculture and horticulture sector.

Sponsored by John Deere, the course gives the ten winning trainees from different backgrounds - agriculture, horticulture, PR or agri-media that have little practical experience of journalism - the opportunity to develop and expand their skills.

Run by a professional training consultant at the John Deere UK headquarters, the course is normally offered to graduates, and includes a variety of lectures from Guild members followed by a work placement in industry to provide real experience of the job.

Matthew said: "I am really pleased to have been given this opportunity. This just goes to show what NFYFC is all about. I heard about the course through the Agriculture and Rural Affairs committee and thought I'd apply for it - not expecting to be accepted. There is no doubt the course will give me a broader range of skills which I can use for both our YFC county magazine, which I edit, but also for my future career aspirations."

As well as the chance to learn more about agri-journalism, the course also gives the trainee who writes the best report the chance to win a £250 prize as well as be awarded the perpetual John Deere trophy.
