Hard work pays off for Herefordshire YFC

Members of the Herefordshire Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs have been competing successfully over the autumn months in live and carcase stockjudging events around the country.

Two members of Craswall YFC, sisters Rebecca and Charlotte Watkins, kicked off a very successful three months of stockjudging when they were placed first and second in the national final of the Young Stockjudge of the Year competition at the Dairy and Livestock Show, at Stoneleigh, in September.

Sixteen teams from 12 YFCs travelled to Ensor's Abattoir, in Cinderford, in October, to compete in the popular county autumn carcase judging competition. Richard Garlick, from Saltmarshe YFC, took first place in each of the three under-26 classes of pigs, lambs and beef.

Four Herefordshire teams went on to Countryside Live, in Harrogate, at the end of October, to compete in the national live and carcase judging finals, where teams had to judge four beef animals and four lambs, live and carcase. Laura Jones, Hereford YFC, finished second and Matt Price, Pencombe YFC, third in the senior lamb judging. Saltmarshe YFC’s Evan Hughes was placed second in the intermediate lamb judging and the Herefordshire C team was placed fifth overall.

A team of eight competitors judged live beef, live lambs, beef and pork carcases at the English Winter Fair, in Stafford, in November, with Pencombe YFC’s Matt Price third in the senior pork carcase competition, and Kamilla Bosley, Ledbury YFC, third in the intermediate pork carcase judging.

Herefordshire were represented in the NFYFC national carcase judge of the year competition by seniors Michael Hanson (Dilwyn YFC), Richard Garlick (Saltmarshe YFC) and intermediates John Hanson (Dilwyn YFC) and Marieka Bosley (Ledbury YFC). Outstanding results were:
Highest scoring competitor in pork section
Intermediate: John Hanson, Dilwyn YFC, (92 points).
Senior: Richard Garlick, Saltmarshe YFC, (93 points).

Highest scoring competitor in beef section
Senior: Richard Garlick, Saltmarshe YFC, (135 points).

Intermediate Carcase Judge of the Year

A team of eight also represented Herefordshire at the Welsh Winter Fair, competing against 13 teams from the Wales and Shropshire Federations. The team had to judge live butchers beef and butchers lambs. Outstanding results were:

U26 Butchers Beef: Michael Hanson, Dilwyn YFC, (first).
U18 Butchers Beef: Lauren Meredith, Hereford YFC, (first).
