Speaking out at county finals

Cumbria YFC’s county finals of the junior public speaking and YFC Ambassador of the Year competitions were held at the George Hotel, Penrith.

Junior public speaking judges Betty Graham and Stephen Rowlinson heard six excellent speakers talking on how to show a calf, the Rock Challenge (an international anti-drug and crime prevention initiative), rough bred fell sheep, diversification, Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, and chihuahua dogs.

Winning by one point was Longtown’s team of Emma Swindlehurst, Anna Batey and Rachel Edminson. Second were Laura Potts, Rachel Graham and Emma Armstrong, from Caldbeck YFC, and third was the Kent Estuary team (Laura Mason, Hannah Park and Bob Lawrence).

Ten senior YFC members were interviewed by past presidents Christine Booth, Joyce Gorst and Alan Bowe in the YFC Ambassador of the Year competition. Andrew Long, of Furness YFC, was named Cumbria’s YFC ambassador, with Craig Brough and Amy Johnson, both of Raughton Head YFC, second and third.

All the competitors will now go forward to the northern area finals of these competitions, at Trinity School, Carlisle, on 6 March.
