Testing time for Cumbria YFC

The final eight teams in the Cumbria Young Farmers’ quiz met at the George Hotel, Penrith, for the county final.

Some 452 YFC members competed in the quiz and, after four eliminating rounds and 400 questions, the final four senior and junior teams met to battle it out.

Caldbeck junior team, Rosie Thompson, Laura Potts, Emma Armstrong and Edward Benn led from the first round and maintained their lead throughout, finishing with a magnificent 34 points, with Brampton second on 26 points, followed by Grayrigg and Pennine.

In the senior quiz, three teams were level after the country knowledge and team round. However, Carlisle’s team gradually pulled ahead and after an exciting buzzer round, won with 29 points, with Grayrigg C and Raughton Head equal second and Grayrigg A in fourth place.

Carlisle’s team of Stephanie Norman, Elizabeth Marrs, Katie Miller, and Matthew Workman were presented with Carrs Billington tankards by the judges, Linda Park and Frank Gate, who also gave the Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart trophies to the Caldbeck team.
