YFC toasters

Senior After Dinner Speaking Competitors

The best debaters in the County met at the George Hotel, Penrith for the final of Cumbria Young Farmers’ After Dinner Speaking Competition.

Judges Chris Batten and Betty Graham were “invited” to dinner with the Jamie Oliver Appreciation Society, the Ballroom Dancers’ Association, Slimming World and the Take That Fan Club.  After the speeches and toasts the scores were added up and Crook YFC were well ahead but only 4 points divided 2nd Drigg, 3rd Kent Estuary and 4th Raughton Head.

Crook’s team of James Park, Richard Carruthers, Becky and Claire Redmayne and Vicci Neil will now compete in the Northern Area Final along with Drigg and Kent Estuary.

Meanwhile the 6 finalists in the YFC Junior Member of the Year Competition were being interviewed by judges Joyce Gorst and Adam Dickinson.  Again this was an extremely close competition with all 6 competitors giving excellent interviews.  They had also submitted portfolios which outline their activities in YFC over the last 12 months.  The final placings were 1st Laura Potts, Caldbeck, 2nd Emma Armstrong, Caldbeck, 3rd Rachel Evans, Raughton Head, 4th Amy Greenup, Brampton.

Laura, Emma and Rachel will compete against the 6 Northern Counties on 19th March at Caedman School, Whitby.
