Prime lamb win for Brecknock YFC member

Ashley Mills, of Troedrhiwdalar YFC, in Brecknock, bred the champion lambs in the Wales YFC best prime lamb producer competition sponsored by Dunbia. The reserve champion was bred by Gwen Samuel, of Aberedw YFC, Radnor.

Ashley, 14, from Llanafan Fawr, near Builth Wells, won with his pair of Suffolk lambs and, as he was competing for the first time, he also won the award for the highest new competitor.

Ashley decided to complete as he enjoys showing and has recently started his own flock of Suffolk sheep. He plans to buy a Suffolk ewe with the money from the lambs he sold.

Eifion Williams of Sennybridge YFC, Brecknock, won the award for the best stockman with his display board showing costings, pictures and information.

Judging was Sainsbury's buyer Tom Harvey. “It was refreshing to see the amount of work that the young farmers had put into the boards. This complemented the time which had clearly been spent on the livestock as well, underlining the fact that the competitors were competent on both the practical and theoretical sides of production,” he said.
