Wales YFC members to perform online video sensation at Glastonbury

Three Young Farmers’ Clubs members are set to wow the Glastonbury crowds after their hilarious parody of a Rihanna song became an online sensation.

Richard Lewis, 18, of Llanfyllin YFC, and Dyffryn Tanat YFC’s 17-year-old Llion Vaughan will take to the festival stage after winning the nationwide Tractor Factor talent competition run by Farmers Guardian newspaper in conjunction with organic dairy farm Yeo Valley.

An X Factor-style public vote saw some 14,000 people pick their favourite from a shortlist of six songs, which celebrate all that is good about modern British farming.

Performing under the name DJ Wooly and Will.I.Lamb, the boys produced a cover of Rihanna’s song S&M with the help of their friend and cameraman Gus Harris, 17, also a former member of of Dyffryn Tanat YFC.

Their video for the song ‘Plough ON!’ received more than 55,000 views on YouTube after it was picked up by BBC Radio 1 DJ Greg James and played on his afternoon show sparking a rush which saw it secure a third of the total public vote.

Winning the competition means the trio gets four tickets to this year’s Glastonbury festival as well as the chance to perform on the Yeo Valley stand there.

Llion said: "The past weeks have been amazing, the response and support from people has been great. This competition was a brilliant and original idea which took a fresh twist on farming. I think this competition has hopefully brought many a smile and chuckle to people across the country, and possibly even made a few farmers hum ‘Plough ON! while out in the fields."

Richard said: "I know schools are showing the video to infant pupils to help teach young children about farming. The competition has also shown that farmers these days are not just people who work with the land but are very diverse and like to have a laugh. It has been a great experience and I have enjoyed it very much. "

The YFC members faced stiff competition from the other acts in the final six, which included a farmer from the Isle of Man, Scotland’s answer to Justin Bieber, the Dorset countryside’s finest rappers and two farming girl groups, Girls A’Cowed and Farming Babes.

The competition shortlist was picked by a panel of judges, which included Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis and Yeo Valley managing director Tim Mead.

Showcasing some of the talent within the farming industry, the competition has been an extraordinary success with more than 200,000 views on its YouTube channel since it launched earlier this year.

Some 33 entries were received from farmers all over the country ranging from parodies of chart hits to songs they had written themselves.

Farmers Guardian’s features editor Danusia Osiowy said: “We launched the competition to put the fun back into farming and promote the industry to a wider audience and that is exactly what Tractor Factor has achieved.

“Young people living and working in the countryside are crucial to agriculture’s future and what better advocates for the profession than those who love and respect it the most?”

The competition, run in conjunction with organic dairy firm Yeo Valley, was launched after the success of Yeo Valley’s TV advert featuring the Yeo Valley rappers in December last year.
