Tickets on sale for Wales YFC English drama competition

The Wales YFC English drama finals will be hosted by Brecknock YFC on 5-6 March.

YFC members from seven counties across Wales will travel to Theatr Brycheiniog, Brecon, to take part in the competition, where the winners will receive the R H Watkins Trophy.

Welsh YFCs have been competing at county level to secure a place in the final, and all the entrants have been continuing to produce and perform plays of the highest calibre, with cast and crew virtually entirely made up of volunteer YFC members.

This year’s final sees the winning clubs from Carmarthenshire, Gwent, Brecknock, Radnor, Montgomery, Pembrokeshire and Glamorgan battling for the award.

The finals begin at 7pm on Friday 5 March, when the Carmarthenshire, Gwent, Brecknock and Radnor teams perform. Montgomery, Pembrokeshire and Glamorgan will be on stage the following evening, also from 7pm.

Tickets for both evenings are available from the Theatr Brycheiniog box office on 01874 611 622.

The Wales YFC English public speaking competition will be held at the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells, from 10am on 6 March.

Challenging time for Wales YFC chairman

Wales YFC chairman Tim John is proving he is up for a challenge. Each of the 12 YFC county federations in Wales have been asked to set Tim a challenge which he will complete alongside YFC members from that county.

Challenge Tim has been set up to raise money and awareness of the Wales YFC charity of the year, Kidney Wales Foundation.

Tim and five members are currently undertaking a challenge set by Carmarthenshire YFC to refrain from shaving or cutting their hair until the Wales YFC field day at Llandovery Market on 10 April, when all of them will have a shave and a haircut prior to the award ceremony.

Anyone wanting to contribute to the fundraising should contact the Wales YFC office or visit www.everydayhero.co.uk/challenge_tim.

Cheriton & Tedburn's cheques for charities

Cheriton & Tedburn YFC handed over cheques to the Devon Air Ambulance (£585.96), Country Holidays for Inner City Kids (£2,535), and Exeter Kidney Unit (£200) after another successful year’s fundraising.

Some £3,320.was raised during the year, £1,350 of it at a recent disco where local publican Roger Cudlip, of the Tom Cobley Tavern, Spreyton, was sponsored to shave off his age-old moustache.

Club chairwoman Gemma Bowden and secretary Chris Berry said: “It is great to see the local communities come together and contribute so generously over the year. We are an active club that has many willing fundraisers and also brings young people from rural areas together to enjoy a wide range of activities and opportunities for personal development.”

Proceeds this year are going to the Exeter-based cancer charity FORCE, which helped a YFC member during his short battle with cancer before Christmas. Fundraising is well under way, with £200 already raised from a coffee morning.
