Wales YFC members set to take centre stage

The Wales YFC centre and stage will be buzzing as the federation puts on an action-packed programme of activities at this year’s Royal Welsh Show from 19-22 July.

The club promotion competition, sponsored by NFU Cymru, will get things under way, with the dancing and Stars In Your Eyes contests providing colourful entertainment over the four days of the show.

Things get sporty in the cattle ring which will host the seven-a-side rugby and the hotly contested tug of war sponsored by Riverlea. The Welsh Capable Campers, sponsored by Morgans Butchers and Pip Samuel, will also be held in the ring.

The shearing shed will host the Wales YFC shearing competition and the Old Action Ring will host the woodwork competition, where competitors will be building dog kennels, and the all-Wales fencing final sponsored by Betafence.

“The Royal Welsh Show is the highlight of the year for many of Wales YFC members which is why we put so much hard work and effort into the four days of the event,” said Wales YFC chairman Tim John.

“We have a jam-packed timetable of competitions of all sorts with more than a thousand members taking part – from events such as the stockjudging, sponsored by Dunbia, flower arranging, sponsored by Deeside College, and cookery, sponsored by Cambrian Training Company, to the newer ones such as the Generation Game for junior members, which is sponsored this year by Mantais,” Tim added.

The village is also home to an excellent camping and caravanning site. Accommodation booking forms and tickets to the event are available online at www.yfc-wales.org.uk or by calling the Wales YFC office on 01982 553502. Entry to the complex is over 16s only.

Wales will be thrown into the international spotlight this year as it hosts the Ryder Cup and the World Shearing Championship.

And to mark this, Wales YFC members have chosen the theme Welcome to Wales for their exhibits and competitions being showcased at the Royal Welsh Show and Young People’s Village from 18-22 July.

The show itself is the biggest agricultural event in Wales, and YFC preparations for it started in January 2009, with the activities and international committee setting the theme.

The training and promotions committee, tasked with promoting the organisation to both members and the public, will be responsible for decorating the YFC centre.

The rural affairs committee will be representing Wales YFC throughout the week at meetings and receptions with partner organisations, and the youth forum committee will be representing junior members by helping other sub-committees with organising aspects of the event.

Wales YFC will be welcoming exchange visitors from the USA, Finland, Ulster, Scotland and Canada to the show and they will be hosted by members and their families as part of the federation’s international programme.

All eyes will be on the YFC stage which will be a focal point showcasing YFC activities, and a full timetable of YFC events at the show can be found online on the Wales YFC website at www.yfc-wales.org.uk. Competition results will also be uploaded to the site at the end of each day.

Wales YFC is working with BBC Radio Cymru on the Sunday night of the YPV, when three popular Welsh bands – this year’s Battle of the Bands winner, plus Tebot Piws and Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog – will be taking to the stage.

Dance Nation Live is ready to tear up the YPV on the Monday night. The famous Ministry of Sound brand will be turning up the volume and taking the biggest rave-up of the year to the hottest party of the summer.

Featuring the biggest dance stars, amazing visuals and hot Dance Nation dancers, this will be a night revellers will never forget.

Radio 1 DJ Greg James has been confirmed as the headline act on Tuesday night, when he will be hosting a beach party-themed night and a foam party.

Greg is already frothing with excitement at being at the YPV and recently spent the day with Wales YFC finding out more about farming and Young Farmers’ Clubs.

“I can’t wait and I hope everyone else will be totally up for it. The set will include big old tunes with lots of Radio 1 favourites and some old classics, too. I promise it will be a lot of fun!

“I love foam parties even though the last time I was at one, the foam accidentally went all over the decks and the producer, Neil, was furiously mopping up all around me,” Greg laughs.

Asked about his day with YFC, Greg adds that he really enjoyed the experience but couldn’t say who had the easiest job – a DJ or a farmer. “Radio 1 DJ is easier because you’re in the warm. However, farmers are allowed to be grumpy if they are feeling bad some mornings, but DJs have to maintain their good spirits all the time on air.”

The fun will be rounded off in style on the Wednesday night by tribute band the Stereotonics and the Sleeves.

Booking forms and more information are available online at www.yfc-wales.org.uk.
