Three counties show success for Staffs YFC

On Saturday 19th June 2010, a full team from Staffordshire YFC was entered in the Three Counties Show Stockjudging Competition. For the first time in many years we had a competitor in the Horse Judging Competition and Ellie Parkes from Lichfield YFC took 1st place – not bad for the first time she has ever taken part in the competition! Harriett and Sammie Wilson from Eccleshall YFC also had great success taking 1st place in the Intermediate Beef and Junior Dairy respectively. Tom Wilkes gained 2nd place in the Intermediate Pigs and Matthew Wright was 2nd in the Intermediate Sheep – again both from Eccleshall YFC. In 3rd place was Isobel Wright in the Intermediate Dairy Class and Mark Robinson in the Senior Dairy class, again from Eccleshall YFC.

Overall on the day the team came 2nd out of the counties outside of the 3 Counties Show Committee which is a great achievement.

Also over the weekend, it was the West Midlands Area Tug of War finals. Staffordshire sent four tug of war teams on Sunday 20th June to compete. Ridware YFC and Waterhouses YFC represented Staffordshire in the male section of the competition, with Waterhouses YFC again, and Eccleshall YFC representing the county in the female section. In true style all Staffordshire teams put a good show on but this seemed not to be enough with Waterhouses ladies finishing 3rd and Eccleshall ladies finishing 4th. However, the men’s competition was a different story with Ridware YFC retaining their title for a third year running, despite a really tough competition. Waterhouses YFC finished in 2nd place. Therefore Staffordshire YFC will have two teams representing the County and Area at the National finals at the Royal Berkshire Show in September this year.

Rural Affairs Minister, Elin Jones AM, will launch a new ‘Young Innovator with Natural Resources’ competition at the Royal welsh Show; a follow on award to the highly successful Agri Environment Award that has been a part of the Royal Welsh Monday for the last 10 years.

The competition is facilitated by Wales YFC, with support from the Countryside Council of Wales (CCW) and the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, and is sponsored by the world renowned energy company, Dulas.

"Dulas is delighted to support the Young Innovator Competition, which promotes opportunities for medium and small scale renewable energy developments in farming communities. Feed-in tariffs now make hydropower, medium wind and photovoltaics all potential investments for farmers - significantly reducing carbon emissions, electricity bills and providing a healthy return on investment,” said Ian Draisey on behalf of Dulas.

Competition entrants must be 40 years old or under and the deadline for receiving applications will be early October 2010. Preliminary rounds of judging will he held in three different areas before the grand final Wales wide. The winners of the total of £3,000 prize money will be announced at the 2010 Royal Welsh Winter Fair in November this year.

Morgan Parry, CCW Chairman said: "It's becoming increasingly important for society to make the most of our natural resources as we strive to create a greener, more sustainable future. I'm delighted to support this pioneering scheme that will reward good practice and, as it develops, encourage many others to consider what natural resources their businesses could use efficiently and effectively. And the benefits will be twofold - not only does innovation with natural resources offer a more sustainable future, it can also bring economic value to businesses as well."

Elin Jones AM stated: “I am delighted to support this scheme which will encourage and promote sustainable land management and good agri-environment practice along with opportunities for efficient use of natural resources. Not only will a prize be given to the overall winner, there will be cash prizes for the entry that is doing the most to reduce their carbon use and the entry that is using innovative ways to reduce their water usage and waste produced. I look forward to hearing about the entries for 2010 and how the competition develops next year.”

The launch will take place on Monday 19th of July at 4.00pm on the CCW stand.

For an application form to apply for the competition please contact Wales YFC or visit the Wales YFC website where you can download an expression of interest form.
