If you are passionate about farming and are looking to take your skills overseas to gain a new perspective and to help others, perhaps Vietnam might be the option for you!
Located along the western side of the South China Sea, Vietnam is historic and culturally rich country in South East Asia. With karst limestone islands sticking out of the sea, cities flooded with motorbikes, reminders of the war everywhere you go and traditional rice-farming communities further inland, this country offers beautiful landscapes and incredibly friendly, welcoming people.
There are three parts to this trip with the opportunity to live and volunteer in Vietnam’s capital city, Hanoi in the first week, followed by a second week being spent further inland in a traditional village, helping out in rice paddies and assisting the farmers with their various traditional farming methods. The weekend in the middle will be spent on an unforgettable trip to see the beautiful Ha Long Bay.

The first week will see the group working in a rural part the city, developing a vegetable and fruit garden at a local school as well as doing some education activities as well as spending a cultural day within the city itself. When you are putting this together, you’ll be working with the local children in order to teach them the importance of your work and how they can maintain it once you leave. Even within a city like Hanoi, it’s incredibly important for people to know how to grow their own food and how to eat healthily and sustainably. It will give you a good opportunity to meet the locals and learn more about the modern culture within the city.

At the end of the first week, you’ll have the weekend to relax and explore more of the country. No trip to Vietnam would be complete without a visit to the beautiful Ha Long Bay to witness the beautiful and almost other-worldly karst limestone islands. Rising hundreds of feet vertically out of the flat sea and topped by trees and lush vegetation, these islands in the sky hide unique floating villages and photo opportunities around every corner. While you’re here, you’ll have the opportunity to go on a boat ride around the bay, visiting the various floating villages and trying some of the local seafood delicacies.

In the second week you will be taken into rural Vietnam to the traditional farming village of Mai Chau. This idyllic Vietnamese village is surrounded by flat rice paddies and towering hills, creating a beautiful and unforgettable landscape. While you’re here, you’ll be working alongside local farmers to understand how they still use traditional methods to harvest the rice and their various other crops. You’ll also help the farmers by helping to sell the vegetables to nearby houses. On top of this, you’ll also learn traditional craft skills and embroidery from the local families to see how else they can bring in some income.

Travelling on a Team Travel programme with fellow young farmers from around the UK will allow you to explore Vietnam in a different way than you could imagine. You will see how agriculture works in this part of Asia, as well as experiencing the culture from the eyes of those that live and work there.
