Training courses 

Two new training courses are available for those involved in YFC safeguarding roles.  

NSPCC DSO Safeguarding Training Two-day Online Course

Date:  Thursday 18 and Friday 19 March 2021

Times:  9.30am to 4.30pm

Location:  Online/Zoom

Cost: £245  

This course, produced and delivered by the NSPCC, is designed to enable participants to understand the role and responsibilities of the designated safeguarding officer in respect of protecting children and young people and to develop competence and confidence in carrying out this role.

Objectives:

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the role and key responsibilities of the designated safeguarding officer
  • State their own values regarding child abuse and neglect and the impact of these on professional practice.
  • Describe the key legislation and guidance underpinning child safeguarding
  • State the blocks that inhibit the disclosure of, and responding to, abuse and ways to overcome these blocks
  • State factors that can render children more vulnerable to abuse and neglect
  • Make appropriate decisions about the action to take in respect of child safeguarding concerns or allegations against staff or volunteers
  • Explain what happens following a referral to the relevant investigating agencies and any implications for the DSO role
  • Explain what measures an organisation needs to have in place to prevent or respond to survivors or perpetrators of sexual abuse
  • Explain the principles of recording, confidentiality and information sharing with regards to safeguarding concerns and allegations
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the emotional dimension of safeguarding work and identify a network for personal support
  • Identify any additional steps that their own organisation requires to strengthen its safeguarding arrangements in light of course learning

NSPCC Designated Safeguarding Officer One-Day Refresher Online Training Course

Date:  Tuesday 13 April 2021

Times:  9.30am to 4.30pm

Location:  Online/Zoom

Cost: £125

This course, produced and delivered by the NSPCC, is designed to refresh and update the knowledge of the Designated Safeguarding Officer to further develop competence and confidence in carrying out this role.

Objectives:

  • Revisit and describe the role of the DSO and state keys areas of responsibility.
  • Describe recent changes in legislation and guidance affecting safeguarding.
  • Review own values regarding child abuse and explain the impact of these on professional practice.
  • State blocks to staff sharing concerns within a multi-agency arena and explore strategies of overcoming these.
  • Recognise contemporary concerns within the field of safeguarding children and young people (e.g. CSE, Online Safety and Neglect).
  • Make appropriate decisions about action to protect children.
  • Highlight the emotional dimension of safeguarding work and identify ways in which the DSO can support self and staff.
