Club Officer check-in: 5 Minutes with...Llywela Edwards, Uwchaled YFC

Llywela Edwards is the Chair of Uwchaled YFC in Clwyd and often wonders how she finds the time to lead 60 members, as well as hold down a full time job and hobbies. We find out in this week's Club Officer Check-in –answers are in Welsh and English.

Q. How long you have been involved in YFC?

13 mlynedd, ac yn hen bryd imi ymddeol!

13 Years, and it's about time I retire!

Q. What responsibility surprised you the most?

Gorfod meddwl am y gystadleuaeth neu'r digwyddiad nesa bob tro - mai'n ‘all-go’!

Having to always think about the next competition or event, it's crazy, but that's why we love it!

Q. How is your club structured?

Rydym yn cwrdd bob nos Lun yn y Neuadd leol, ac yn croesawu unrhyw un rhwng 13 a 28. Rydym yn trefnu rhai digwyddiadau i'r aelodau dros 18, ac mae Sir Clwyd yn trefnu ambell noson i'r aelodau dan 18, ond ar y cyfan, ma’n well ganddoni fod hefo’n gilydd!

We meet every Monday night in the village hall, and we welcome anyone between 13-28. We arrange some activities for members over 18 (one guess what that involves). Clwyd County often arranges activities for under 18 members, but overall, we prefer to do everything together as a club.

Q. How do you balance your club duties with other commitments in your life?

Cwestiwn da: dwi’n gweithio i Gomisiynydd y Gymraeg, yn chwarae pêl droed bob dydd Sul, ac yn canu mewn côr, ymysg llawer o bethau eraill.

I'm not sure I do...I work full time with the Welsh Language Commissioner, play football every Sunday, sing in a choir, amongst other things! But somehow I do manage to fit everything in!

Q. Tell us about a top skill you've developed through this role?

Gobeithio fy mod wedi datblygu sgiliau o arwain y clwb, gan fod yn esiampl dda i aelodau iau.

I hope I've learned how to lead a club, and be an example to younger members.

Q. How does your club recruit and welcome new members?

Gan fod y Clwb yn gwneud gymaint yn y gymuned, mae aelodau newydd yn ymuno bob blwyddyn heb lawer o waith recriwtio. Digwyddiad cynta'r flwyddyn bob tro yw’r Helfa Drysor, sydd bob amser yn boblogaidd!

As the Club is so active in the community, we have new members joining every year without much persuasion. Our first event of the year is the treasure hunt, which is always popular with our members.

Q. What's a challenge you have faced as a young leader of a club?

Mae’r gwhaniaeth oedran rhwng aelodau hŷn a iau y clwb yn gallu teimlo’n fawr ar brydiau. Dyma pam ein bod yn ceisio creu awyrgylch ein bod i gyd yn y clwb yn un criw, a nid ni fel athrawon i’r rhai iau!

The age gap between senior and junior members can feel massive at times. That’s why we’ve tried to create an environment in the club where everyone is one team, and we are not there to babysit!

Q. How does your club plan its programme?

Mae Mared, ein ysgrifenyddes wych, yn cynllunio'r mwyafrif o nosweithiau clwb ar ddechrau bob tymor. Deni’n trio cael cymysgedd o dripiau a nosweithiau lleol (am ddim!) i osgoi bod rhy gostus.

Mared, our secretary, arranges most of the club nights at the start of each term. We try to have a balance between trips, and local club nights (which are free!) to avoid too much cost to members. Games night is always popular!

Q. What one tip would you give to others in a similar role to you?

Cael ffrindiau da a chefnogaeth. Mae'n waith caled bod ar y pwyllgor felly mae angen gweithio fel tim i wneud yr holl beth fymryn yn haws!

To have good friends and support around you. Being on the committee is hard work, so having a good team working together makes it all a little bit easier!
