Meet Maisie, the Club Chair of Beacon YFC in East Riding of Yorkshire. Maisie leads a group of 45 members and shares her experience in the role.
Ensuring we had the correct junior to senior ratios for meetings when senior members had other events on. Growing relationships with club leaders so that they could cover some of the meetings.
I’ve found doing little and often helps stay on top of everything. Don’t let it mount up to be a day’s worth of tasks.
Understanding how to communicate with different people. The way you explain a game to a junior is different to talking to a potential club sponsor. Also understanding that sometimes people better absorb information through photos and graphics rather than long wordy messages.
Making sure all age groups mix with each other and don’t isolate themselves. I’ve found mixing up people during meetings, rather than allowing people to sit with the groups they’re usually in, means they have to talk to everyone.
We have a dedicated Programme Secretary who does a great job at gathering ideas from all club members.
One of my favourite meetings so far this year was our Taskmaster style New Members' Night. We made it farming related and it showed the true characters of our members!
Enjoy it - you’re a member too. Make sure everyone on the committee does their role as well. They signed up for it – you don’t need to be doing six roles yourself.
Finally grow your relationship with your club leaders and advisory – they’ll help your club flourish!
