Heart of YFC Award: Stuart Brown

Heart of YFC Award: Stuart Brown, East Riding of Yorkshire

Stuart Brown is the embodiment of what it means to be a Young Farmer – passionate, positive, and deeply committed to the values of Young Farmers’ Clubs (YFC).

Described by judges as “instantly likeable,” Stuart has built strong connections across the Federation and is celebrated for his infectious optimism, confidence, and dedication to the YFC community.

A member since the age of 12, Stuart’s journey through YFC has involved many leadership roles. From his early days as Junior Chair to his current role as Treasurer of Beacon YFC, he has also served as Programme Secretary, Secretary, and Chair.

At the county level, he has been instrumental in various roles, including Rally Chair in 2023, county Junior Chair for two years, and currently serves as county Vice Chair. He is also a Northern Area delegate and East Riding YFC’s deputy council representative.

Stuart’s passion for YFC extends beyond titles. He thrives on encouraging others to get involved, believing that participation is the key to unlocking the full potential of the organisation.

“It’s not about winning,” said Stuart. “My legacy is to keep going, be positive, and have a go at everything.”

His leadership was especially vital during the post-COVID period when he and the club secretary had to step up and run the club with a new committee.

His resilience and positivity helped steer the club through challenging times. Stuart also played a pivotal role in organising the first-ever club exchange between Beacon YFC and Culm Valley YFC in Devon, coinciding with Beacon’s first rally win in years – a personal dream come true.

Stuart’s commitment to inclusivity and development is evident in his choice to participate in county training as a delegate rather than a facilitator, ensuring he remained grounded and relatable. His insight during training – encouraging clubs to involve juniors more – sparked meaningful discussions and inspired change.

He also took on a leading role in the county Pantomime team, travelling long distances for rehearsals and creating friendships and memories among the cast. His pride in his brother’s award success in the Pantomime reflects his supportive nature and team spirit.

Stuart sums up his YFC experience best:

“There is more to Young Farmers than just competing. It’s about being part of a community where young people work together to run a club the way they want. That’s what makes it special.”

Well done Stuart!

Joe Hilyer - runner up

Runner up: Joe Hilyer, Leicestershire & Rutland

Joe devotes most of his spare time to YFC and is always looking for ways to bring the YFC community together. Joe’s welcoming and supportive nature encourages younger members to get involved, and as Netherseal’s Club Chair, he’s been key to growing the club’s membership to 90.

His passion for community has driven him to organise charity events, including a successful tractor run, and raise more than £33,000 for charities. Joe’s enthusiasm inspires others, and his club are extremely proud to call him their Chair.
