A popular educational scheme in Norfolk is being rolled out nationwide in 2026 and YFCs are being encouraged to get involved.
The National Learn about Livestock Week initiative was started by The Food & Farming Discovery Trust (FFDT) and will take place from 16-20 March 2026.
The Trust, in partnership with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, RNAA and Three Rivers and Chapelfield Farm Vets Partnership, gives up to 20 schools each year the opportunity to participate in a hands-on experience looking after a ewe and her lamb(s) for one school week.
The project is aimed at giving students, ranging from early years to sixth form, in both mainstream and SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) schools, the chance to learn about animal husbandry and to engage schools in food and farming education.
The hands-on experience helps students of all ages develop a better understanding of animal welfare, food production, and the role of farming in everyday life. The five-year-old initiative has reached over 14,000 students to date.

Supported by NFU Education and the FFDT’s sister charity the Royal Agricultural Society of England, they are now sharing their experience and resources to empower other organisations to host their own ‘Learn About Livestock’ weeks.

Frances Roberson, the FFDT Trust Manager and a former Norfolk County Chair, said:
"It is essential for children to understand the connections between farming, livestock, and the food they consume, and this hands-on experience facilitates that understanding.
“We consistently receive positive feedback from participating schools and eagerly anticipate extending this enriching experience to more institutions throughout other regions, making sure that children across the country can all have the same opportunities.”
The Trust aims to support other organisations in rolling out the ‘Learn About Livestock’ week nationwide, inspiring the next generation of food and farming enthusiasts.
The project can be delivered by any agricultural supporting organisation, including YFCs.
To help new delivery partners get started, the Food & Farming Discovery Trust has developed a comprehensive ‘how-to’ information pack to guide implementation, which can be downloaded here.
